Event Description

New Poetry Readings & Open Mic for  2011

'Poetry Nights at Sappho'  will  be returning to the original format from 10 years ago and will be hosted by the gentle and encouraging Amanda Moriarty, whom many of you may remember as the events  original creator, back in the old shop. Thanks to Adrian for his great nights last year.

Poetry readings are held on the second Tuesday of every month, from 7pm to 9pm.

The next Poetry Night  for 2011 will be on:

Tuesday 12th April  2011
starting at 7pm

The  guest Poet will be:

David Brooks

followed by the usual and very popular Open Mic.

David Brooks

David Brooks has been called one of the quiet masters of Australian poetry. His first collection, The Cold Front, won the Ann Elder Award and was shortlisted for the NSW Premier's Prize. His second, Walking to Point Clear, twenty-three years later, was shortlisted for the Adelaide Festival John Bray Award. His third, Urban Elegies, set largely in Glebe, was said by Robert Adamson to contain some of the best and most uplifting poetry he had read in years. His fourth, The Balcony, a collection of love and erotic poetry, has been called a masterpiece (John Kinsella), likened to the work of Neruda and Prévert, and was shortlisted for the NSW Premier's and ACT Poetry prizes. Brooks is also a novelist (The Fern Tattoo) and essayist, and teaches at the University of Sydney. The Sons of Clovis, a major work completely revising the story of the Ern Malley Hoax, will be released in August by UQP.

Come and have some fun, read or just listen -- all poetry is good for the soul. Hope to see you there!

To read your work in the open mic comp.. just turn up!

The wine and tapas bar will be open so you can have a meal and glass of wine while you're there if you fancy it.
Starts at 7.00 pm in the garden at Sappho's wine and Tapas bar. Great food, great poetry! Look forward to seeing you all there.
