Event Description

Carol Jenkins lives in Sydney. Her first book of poetry Fishing in the Devonian (Puncher & Wattmann, 2008) was short listed for the 2009 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards. Billy Collins, the former US Poet Laureate, says “Fishing in the Devonian is one of the most interesting books I have the pleasure of reading in some time. Every poem is lively with conceptual and emotional play.” Andrew Motion, the former British Poet Laureate, says of it, “…a strange and original mixture of the intense and the humorous. Bravo.” Her next book, Xn is due out from Puncher &Wattmann in July 2013. Vivian Smith was born in Tasmania in 1933 and started publishing in the early 1950’s in the Sydney Bulletin and appeared in New World Writing, New York, in 1956. He has travelled in Europe, Asia and South America but his poems are mainly centered in Hobart and Sydney, the two oldest Australian cities which play a central role in his poetry as in his life, providing key geographical and historical images in his exploration of notions of permanence and change, and in his quirky sense of the bizarre in ordinary life. He taught French for ten years at the University of Tasmania before moving to the University of Sydney where he was Reader in English and Australian Literature until he retired in 1996. He has published nine collections of poetry, most recently Traveller’s Tale and other poems, and Here, There and Elsewhere.
