Escalator glides upwards . . .
21 people glide upwards too . . .
Fat . . .Thin . . .Large . . .Small . . .
Tall . . .Young . . .Old . . .Black . . .
White . . .Male . . .Female . . .
Some remain stationary on this
escaltor to second floor
shopping heaven . . .
others can't wait that long,
they push past to attain
retail Shangri-la, or
somewhere close to it,
the pulse of the almighty
dollar propelling them ever
upwards towards commercial
salvation.
This tableau in motion
represents the Queue of Life,
and it ends abruptly at the top.
In tottering footsteps they tumble
off, and disperse, never to be
together again in that space,
or in that order of ascension,
a once only random equation
brought about by those twin
villians . . .chance and circumstance.
Broadway Shopping Centre, 2008.
