Funky Cafe on King St, Newtown could be a go. It's my Cafe Poet cafe, and they're very kind. Also make a mean mojito, which is important.

I'll check it out... Is it quiet? – could they accommodate several groups of say 6-8 people.

Definitely. It's not particularly quiet though - there tends to be live music most nights. But that could be fun...
