Event Description

The British bombing campaigns of World War II produced poetry to rival that which came out of the trenches in World War I, says Daniel Swift. Swift set out to tell the story of his grandfather, a World War II bomber and poet, but instead produced an eloquent account of the morality of mass bombardment. Himself a chronicler of this period, AC Grayling found Swift’s book immensely moving even though the two disagree on the subject of the bombings of Dresden and Hamburg. They reveal a world previously unknown to us.

Daniel Swift
Daniel Swift was born in 1977. His essays, profiles and reviews have appeared in the ‘FT Magazine’, ‘The New York Times Book Review’ and ‘The Daily Telegraph’. He teaches in the department of English literature at Skidmore College in upstate New York. ‘Bomber County’ is his first book.

AC Grayling
AC Grayling is professor of philosophy at Birkbeck College, University of London, and a multi-talented author. He has been a regular contributor to ‘The Times’, the ‘Financial Times’, ‘The Observer’, the ‘Independent on Sunday’, ‘The Economist’, ‘The Literary Review’, ‘New Statesman’ and ‘Prospect’, and is a frequent and popular contributor to radio and television programs. His books include ‘Thinking of Answers’, ‘Liberty in the Age of Terror’, ‘Descartes’, ‘Toward the Light of Liberty’ and ‘Among The Dead Cities’. ‘The Good Book’ is his latest work.
