Event Description

Is poetry at risk when it travels? Zafer Şenocak and Kei Miller read their poems and tell Susan Hayes about the journey their words make across borders of geography, culture and language.

Zafer Şenocak (International)
Zafer Şenocak was born in Ankara and has been living in Germany since 1970, where he is a prominent voice in discussions on multiculturalism and national identity, and a mediator between Turkish and German culture. A widely published poet, essayist, novelist, journalist and editor, Şenocak has won several prestigious literary awards in Germany. He writes for major German newspapers and has been writer in residence at a number of American universities and colleges. His work has been translated into numerous languages. Kei Miller (International)
Kei Miller has published several collections of poetry and a book of short stories, ‘The Fear of Stones’, which was shortlisted for a Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. His debut novel, ‘The Same Earth’, won the Una Marson Prize for Literature, the biggest literary award in Jamaica. He was longlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize for Young Writers in 2008. He divides his time between Jamaica and the UK and currently teaches creative writing at the University of Glasgow. Supported by the British Council.

Susan Hayes (Australian)
Susan Hayes is director of literature at the Australia Council for the Arts. Since emigrating from the UK in 1981, Susan has worked extensively in the field of Australian literature and publishing in Western Australia and New South Wales. She is a Churchill Fellow and has a M.Phil in Australian studies from the University of Western Australia.
