Event Description

A unique exhibition and auction of new works by 15 of Australia's most celebrated and exciting artists.

The empty chair is a symbol used globally to represent those writers whose voices have been silenced, life or liberty taken, in the fight for freedom of expression.

Without this fundamental human right there can be no champions for any other right.

In this powerful exhibition each artist uses an empty chair as their canvas. The result is 15 original artworks that take freedom of expression - its celebration and its endangerment - as their theme.

Artists:
Ken Done
Reg Mombassa
Cressida Campbell
Nicholas Harding
Garry Shead
Elisabeth Cummings
Ann Thomson
Bruce Petty
Michael Fitzjames
John Shakespeare
Jasper Knight
Delma Montesin-McCausland
Silke Raetze
Matthew Martin
Gria Shead

The chairs will be auctioned on Thursday June 3. All proceeds to Sydney PEN's campaign for justice in the Asia Pacific.
