Chris Nealon, distinguished fellow visiting from John Hopkins University, will unite with Sydney-poet Pam Brown to present an evening of readings that meditate on everyday life and the seismic implications of individual actions. Connecting their mutual concerns with the abstraction and elaboration of common experiences, both are poets that distinctly reframe the personal to examine the possibility of agency and the repercussions of action.

They will be joined by recent UNSW students and graduands Josh Mei-Ling Dubrau and Lewis-Allan Trathen, reading their recent works.

About the authors

Chris Nealon

Chris Nealon teaches in the English Department at Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of two books of criticism, Foundlings: Lesbian and Gay Historical Emotion before Stonewall (Duke, 2001) and The Matter of Capital: Poetry and Crisis in The American Century (Harvard, 2011), and three books of poetry: The Joyous Age (Black Square Editions, 2004), Plummet (Edge Books, 2009) and Heteronomy (Edge, 2014). A chapbook, The Victorious Ones, is recently out from Commune Editions. He lives in Washington, DC.

Pam Brown

Pam Brown has published many books, chapbooks and an e-book. She has been actively involved in a diverse gamut of poetic activity since the 1970s. Pam has been a contributing editor for Overland, Jacket, Jacket2, Fulcrum, Ekleksographia &, most recently, for Cordite Poetry Review. In 2014 she edited ten booklets of new transnational poetry, the deciBels series, for Vagabond Press. Vagabond published her new collection,Missing up, in December 2015. She lives in Sydney.

Josh Mei-Ling Dubrau

Josh Mei-Ling Dubrau holds a PhD from UNSW. Her work, both critical and creative, has appeared in Poetry and the Trace (Puncher & Wattman, 2013) Southerly, Cordite, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian, The Night Road (Newcastle Poetry Prize judges’ anthology 2009) and Computer Music Journal. Current projects include further development (in collaboration with Mark Havryliv) of the P[a]ra[pra]xis software suite, a realtime poetry and audio generator based on the idea of the Freudian slip, completing her first collection, and a bold attempt to rewrite the poetry canon in haiku using the ‘doge’ meme.

Lewis-Allan Trathen

Lewis-Allan is a poet and spoken word performer currently completing his Honors in fictocritical poetry. He has performed as a feature artist at numerous slams and festivals around NSW, and in 2015 was a State Finalist in the Australian Poetry Slam. He is fascinated by the capacity for poetry to survive the violation of its formal conventions, and the erosion of perceived differences between spoken and written traditions.
