Down here we whisper to each other, our bodies a pile of twisted broken bones,
Our souls crying out for justice in the darkness, our only crime was to be born,
Ireland of our faithful Fathers and Mothers, our religion our guidance and our light,
How we shamed you by our mere existence, dirty little secrets to be kept out of sight.
Your own flesh and blood excommunicated, to serve those that may look over your fence,
Then all the lies and cover up stories, never once standing up in your daughters defence,
Have you ever wondered then what became of us, did you believe every story you were told,
Grandsons and daughters will all have a good home, that’s all their Mothers need to know.

Down here we sometimes sing to each other, soft lullabies the older ones can recall,
We hope there is a better place waiting for us, once the truth is known to one and all,
How I wish I could remember my Mams face, but all I remember is hands letting go,
I am leaving the light for the cover of darkness, left to die naked and all alone.
Our story is not unique, there are more dark secrets buried deep beneath us,
Places like this are always built on despair, evil attracts evil like squirrels to nuts,
The State and the Church working hand in hand, solving two problems at the same time,
They take the babies that survive from unmarried mothers, a political production line.

Down here we are not jealous of those that survived; the sickly ones all end up like me,
Forgotten statistics on misplaced files, while our Mothers believe we are alive and carefree,
But what about the ones that hid us away, how will they all plead on their judgement day
Their Holy orders did not include murder, but they efficiently carried it out anyway.
What of the hierarchy that stanchioned it all, where do they sit in Gods great scheme,
The Bishops with their fine tastes for food and wine, amidst all the anguish and shame,
Our suffering will eventually come to an end, but theirs will burn holes through time,
They think of us with the last breath they take, as they prepare to answer for their crimes.

Down here we can feel something happening now, strange noises coming from overhead,
Something digging, maybe another badger, they often share their homes with the dead,
Suddenly we can hear metal on metal, a shovel scraping along the heavy metal cover,
Then voices muffled but human come from above, are we about to be uncovered.
Now silence for what appears to be an age, please keep looking don’t let us be forgot,
More scraping noises from around the edges, as the lid is lifted a voice cries O MY GOD,
It’s a woman all in white with black boots, surrounded by the most beautiful sky of blue,
More people in white quickly gather around her, at last there will be no stopping the truth.

Down here we are all free now, as our souls are drawn to an even more wonderful light,
Looking back down on our mortal remains for the last time, just have time to say goodbye,
We are gone and they will be exposed, it may take years and years of political red tape,
The deeper they dig the more they will find, and the higher it goes the worse it gets,
Some will always say to let sleeping dogs lie, others will say that we should never forget,
The Church and the State will try to pass the buck, as people hold power in high places,
But as all the layers of the onion are peeled back, look you then for all those red faces.
