Removal of Catherine Tunke

Posted on June 7, 2013 at 23:30 3 Comments

Good evening all,

I expect this notice will come as a surprise to some, and as something well overdue for others.

Catherine Tunke has been removed from the site.

Some weeks ago, following several keenly felt complaints about her behaviour, I issued Catherine with a warning. Prior to that I'd been periodically monitoring her activity in the site since December.

My observation is that Catherine has made a point of goading and trolling some members…

Unwelcome Comments

Posted on June 26, 2012 at 22:30 2 Comments

Hello everyone!

There have been lately unwelcome comments made on people's poems.

After receiving some complaints I have counselled the people responsible and invited them to renew their familiarity with the member's poetry welcome and the notes therein on the tone of comments.

Naturally I'm confident things will improve.

Simply put – let's all act in a positive and contributing way when making comments on the…

Usually when an opportunity crosses our desk we simply post it in the Events section with all the other opportunities for sydneypoetry.com members to go at with hammers and tongs. This one though is too delightfully named, and scoped, to go without better…

Yes, Ethel. I understood the same - & you live on, although your house is now declared a heritage item!

Clearly you are the phantom sibling of the invisible friend of James McAuley and Harold Stewart. Is that grinding and groaning I hear the sound of an angry penguin turning in his grave?

Dear Ethel

I am assuming that you are a site moderator because late last year you objected to my publishing of a ‘cute pussy cat’ photo’ [your description]. To respect your [inferred] position I removed this image though I did not understand why you should object to poetry CD front cover illustration.

However, your objection to my CD cover when compared the commercial advertising now appearing on the site begs the question:

Why is 'Poetry Sydney’ featuring advertising material for this industrial polyurethane peddler, ‘Ultimate Linings’? What next, an evangelistic rave in favour of ‘brown coal’ power stations?

This posting [according to stated policy] has no place 'Poetry Sydney’. If the site moderators believe otherwise one must conclude that an unconscionable selling of the soul has occurred and that 'Poetry Sydney’ is on its way to hell in a polyurethane lined hand basket.

However, the immediate expunging of the ‘Ultimate Linings’ commercial detritus will go some way to demonstrate ‘keeping the faith’.

Regards and best wishes

Dermott,

Thanks for letting us know about the spam – Ultimate Linings has been given the arse.

After some unpleasant experiences about a year ago we put some precautions in place to obstruct spammers, but few measures are completely perfect and we have to balance their intrusiveness with the need to make the site still easy to access for genuine members.

So spammers can still get in if they're crafty enough.

Also – we don't watch the site non-stop all the time. We really do rely on our members to let us know when something is up, and then aim to respond pretty promptly.

It's not, in other words entirely unexpected that something like this happens. I understand your concern and loss of faith, but my own view is that this is not a rebuke to the quality or character of the site – it's just a fact of life in the online world, and the best we can do is react quickly.

I should also add that the personal details of members held in the site database are under a much higher level of security again – and we stand by the safety of that system.

Best,

EMM

Dear Ethrel, there appears to be a problem with the top content, which has a post by a new member Sophy. Who has one of my early poems "Silver Dream Catcher" attatched to some disturbing spam.

Can you please look into this for me as it does not look good.

Many Thanks,

'David. L

Dear Aunt Ethel

Why are some members posting links to poems and reviews on other sites? Surely, the poems and reviews should be posted on Poetry Sydney in order to do justice to this site?
