Varuna Fellowships offer writers a residency in a dedicated environment to develop an established writing or illustration project.

2011 is Varuna's 20th birthday. Each year since 1991 Varuna has offered at least 25 Fellowships for Writing Retreats. Over that time Varuna has developed a unique environment encouraging sustained work, conversation and community among writers.

Varuna Fellowships for Writing Retreats are open to writers resident in Australia. In 2011 Varuna will award 22 Varuna Fellowships for Writing Retreats, three Flagship Fellowships and four Second Book Fellowships.

Writers need to be engaged on a major project but the residential Varuna environment is ideally suited to writers at all stages of writing practice and experience, and writers may be emerging or established.

Fellowships are offered in all genres of creative writing or illustrating, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, childrens or young adults books, writing for stage or screen, essays or short fiction.

Applications are open from 1 August 2011.
