Event Description

Warm up your Winter with a wild evening from the ORIGINAL Bardflys !

Tuesday August 2nd WordinHand at The Friend in Hand Hotel in Glebe features...

Dead Set Genius Tug Dumbly, Dark and Dangerous Benito Di Fonzo, plus musical interludes from Bass and Kazoo legend John "Mad Axe" Maddox.

Tug Dumbly remembers:
"Every week for seven years we’d throw out the net and never know what we’d haul in, but there rarely failed to be a doubloon or two glinting in the catch - a whiskey priest, a retired submariner, an old Spanish whore - a colourful cast of characters richer and stranger than any sitcom could ever hope to devise. Any or all of them might breach the stairs to the Friend in Hand’s upper galley, like the setup to a thousand-punchline joke, to set sail on the good ship Bardflys in the name of camaraderie, art and hard liquor."
- from "Bardflys: A Sketch" (full text available at http://www.wordinhand.org/tug-s_bardflys_sketch)

Benito Di Fonzo says:
"The bloodline of The Bardflys is carried on today, as is evidenced in the body of work sometimes referred as The Di Fonzo Code; a group of poems, plays and anecdotes of half forgotten ambition that, many scholars swear, bear in them, somewhere beneath the scatological cheap laughs and self deprecating bad grammar, secrets of epic failure unknown to The Illuminati, The Masons, The Mansons or even The Australian Labour Party.
- from "The Bardflys – An even Briefer Ancient History (aka The Di Fonzo Code)" (full text available at http://www.wordinhand.org/the-bardflys-an-even-briefer-ancient-history)

John "Mad Axe" Maddox is an eccentric musician. He plays bass and kazoo. John can move between a solemn, almost classical sound, into jazz and then on to gypsy music. He’s also a brilliant be-bop jazz vocal scat stylist, and a long-time collaborator with Bardflys.

WordinHand is Sydney’s premier regular and enduring poetry / spoken word event, providing open mike opportunities for voices directly from the Sydney community plus a high-energy poetry slam every month in addition to a featured poet or two.

First Tuesdays except January, 7:30 for 8:00 PM. Donation $10/$5. Slam Prize $50.
