I am pleased to extend to you an invitation to attend the Sydney Poetry Bookers Picnic and the launch of the second Australian Poetry Journal, 2012.
The inaugural poetry picnic will feature representatives of 14 regular readings held in Sydney throughout the year. The initiative seeks to recognise the significance of these poetry events in forging poetry communities and developing support of the art form.
The family event will be located in the historic park reserves of the Paddington Reservoir Gardens, known for its contemporary urban design, stone work and sunken in gardens. The setting is a befitting endorsement of the vibrant and diverse poetry that happens every week in Sydney.
Those that book poets and coordinate events will come together in representation of their event and in celebration of the art form. These event managers ensure that the art form is supported and continues to develop within Sydney’s many communities. From the more established events through to the emerging, performative and the competitive such as the Australian Poetry Slam organised by Word Travels, to the underground word-gypsies, of Caravan Slam.
The Live Poets Society that operates at Don Bank Cottage has been running for 22 years, the Brett Whiteley Readings 13 years. Sydney poetry events feature, local, regional, national and international poets and collaborators across a range of different venues, from libraries, galleries, museums to pubs and clubs.
Featured will be poets representing, The Blue Space, Brett Whiteley Readings, Caravan Slam, Live Poets Society, Performoetics, Poetry Unlimited Press, Red Room, Rhyzomic Poetry, Sapphos Readings, Sydney Poetry, Token Imagination, Wednesday Night Poets, WordinHand and Word Travels.
Music by Sydney-based musician Dave Rodriguez.
