Event Description

Announcing a upcoming art exhibition from this Wednesday, 24th April.

Who among you know Lesley Dimmick? Maybe few yet for twenty years or more she's created opportunity for artists with a hankering to express something important even it ultimately it sets them on another path altogether.

Here's what Lesley is up to on Wednesday, the evening of the 24th April at her remarkable creation, the TAP Gallery.

NEW WORKS BY LESLEY DIMMICK

meet the artist Wednesday 24th April 6-8pm

Exhibition will be on view daily until 12 May

Lesley Dimmick is the manager and founder of TAP Gallery, an artist-run non-profit gallery that was born out of the need for a space to nurture artists.  TAP Gallery’s vision is to support Sydney’s art scene by providing an affordable space for artists to exhibit.  TAP supports all forms of artists at a grassroots level including visual artists, performing artists, playwrights, film makers and poets, comedians and magicians.  TAP stages regular art prizes and group shows giving all artists an opportunity to participate.   The annual Real Refuse is a national exhibition in April each year showcasing the rejects from the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman, some of which are returned to the artists unopened.  TAP was voted Best Art Gallery in Sydney for works under $5000 in 2008.  Over the past 24 years many of Australia’s foremost artists including Andrew Logan, Carlos Barrios, Mark Hanham and James Powditch have launched their exciting careers at TAP Gallery.

Thousands of artists have been touched by Lesley’s warm-hearted magic and encouragement and have had the opportunity to expand their artistic achievements via the launching pad that TAP Gallery and Lesley provide.  Lesley is well known in the arts community as manager of TAP Gallery but not so much as an artist – who, incidentally has been hung in the Portia Geach The Retrospective is a time for Lesley to promote her own artistic endeavours, showcasing many artworks which were snapped up as soon as they were exhibited as well as new works for her annual birthday exhibition.

Brief profile of Lesley

Lesley has been exhibiting her artwork since 1985. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Art School with distinctions in drawing, and a Higher Certificate in printmaking. Lesley was awarded a highly commended in the Barry Stern Print Award and hung in the Portia Geech Portrait Prize.

Lesley is currently co-ordinator of TAP Gallery a busy contemporary exhibition space, with multiple facilities including theatre, sketch club, poetry readings and café. Independent artists can hire TAP for all art forms.

Anyway I've been invited to add some of my recent works to hang alongside Lesley's in her exhibition starting with the opening on Wednesday evening the 24th April, downstairs at the TAP Gallery in 278 Palmer Street/45 Burton Street, Darlinghurst.

Lesley mentions in her brief description to me that she sees her presence more so as the path travelled, the roads, walkways and freeways spilling into a greater landscape.
In my work I observe a fascination with water. I've never liked water much but that may change. Maybe it's because I'm originally a boat person, a refugee from a water logged landscape on the other side of the world to grow up in this dry and dusty country which nevertheless supports an incredible richness of water in quality, volume and momentum, and which I try to capture in these recent paintings that I now show as an adjunct to Lesley's fine work.
The only question I pose is "What does water mean to you?"

Hope to see you there.
