Thousands of Sails - Launch of Australian Poetry
Wheeler Centre, Melbourne
Australian Poetry (Limited) is the merger of the Australian Poetry Centre and Poets Union (based in NSW). It is the peak industry body for poetry in Australia, supporting and promoting the Australian poetry community, building audiences for poetry and demonstrating diversity and inclusivity in developing a presence for Australian poets and poetry locally, nationally and internationally.
‘Thousands of sails’, a phrase from a poem... translated by distinguished Australian poet, Ouyang Yu, which alludes to the colour and contradiction inherent in Australian poetry. Emeritus Professor, Chris Wallace-Crabbe, calls poetry an ‘often quiet art’, though a large community of Australians read, write, and contribute to the form.
This event celebrates one country embracing many voices, many languages, many places. Welcome to a new era in Australian poetry with the launch of Australian Poetry.
Performances on the evening will be by poets Yvette Holt, Ouyang Yu, Dagmar Leupold, and Chris Wallace-Crabbe.
Tickets can be booked via the Wheeler Centre website from Friday 28 January.
This looks great! I wish I could be there, make sure there are lots of photos, etc!
